The Real Agave

Agave’s Honey Water produces beautifully complex Mezcal Wines including the best known variety, Tequila.

Tequila Defined

Tequila is one of six “Mezcal Wines,” the generic name given to all distillates of the agave plant. It is made by first fermenting then distilling the “aquamiel,” or honey water, from one Agave plant (which is actually a “succulent,” not to be confused with a cactus!). Only the particular species, Agave Tequilana Weber var. azul, is sanctioned for tequila production, and it can only be produced in Mexico in the state of Jalisco and certain other designated municipalities within 4 other states. This detail sets tequila apart as the only spirit of the seven major spirit types that has an appellation of origin as well as being specific to one country. (more…)

A New Home, A Timeless Mission

The Folks at Mississippi Blood Services do a Job so Basic, so Vital, so Fundamental to Who We Are as a Society That Plain Language is Called for: They Provide Us the Extra Blood That Can Save Our Lives.

The message is simple. Mississippi Blood Services (MBS) is doing such a good job that the amount of blood they distribute every year has almost doubled in the last decade. What’s even more amazing is the fact that the demand for blood has outgrown the supply. In fact, of the 126,000 units distributed last year, only 69,000 were collected in the service area. The rest had to be purchased to keep up with demand. (more…)

Mezza!

Local Restaurant, Exotic Flavor

When Maya Mahouli was a child in Sidon, Lebanon, she stood in the kitchen at her mother’s elbow, the aromas of her country fragrant in her nose. Standing there, she watched, listened and learned about the cuisine of her homeland. Today, those same scents drift through the air at Mezza, Mahouli’s new restaurant on Main Street in Madison. The journey from child novice to executive chef has been non-traditional, but the flavor and the quality of the food tell their own story. (more…)

Composite vs Amalgam Fillings

Silver or White? It is a Choice!

Even with care, treatment and regular cleaning, teeth can develop cavities or become fractured. As long as they are used, teeth are vulnerable to stains and decay. When patients need help with decay, dentists use the time-honored method of filling the teeth.

The question that dentists face with their patients is whether to go with the traditional method of filling — known as amalgams — or the newer method called composites. The differences are material and color. Amalgams are a metal made of a silver-tin alloy, copper and mercury. Composites are a composite resin designed to roughly match the natural color of teeth. Be Known for Something

Is Your Business a “Go To” Place for Something? Just one thing? You should be. This and Two Other Golden Rules to Do Business By.

One of the keys to business success, start-up and otherwise, is to be known for something, just one, single something. It allows you to specialize rather than be simply categorized.

Rule Number One: Be known for something

Five Guys is known for burgers and fries. Abner’s is known for chicken. Batteries Plus is known for batteries! By being known for a thing, a business can accelerate its market presence more than with any other single strategy. It allows businesses like Batteries Plus to compete with category stores like Walmart. That is not to say that Walmart is not successful or known for anything. Walmart spends a lot of money pushing the message of low prices. McDonald’s is undeniably the fast food king. However, it is not known for a single item, such as hamburgers. They promote fast food items from salad to fish to wraps to McRib Sandwiches. Category businesses are known for more general attributes such as price, speed or convenience. Again, by being known for a single thing a business can more easily draw business from category leaders. (more…)
