Spoil yourself Old School. Hops & Habanas steps up as the go-to place for Pints and Cigars in Madison
Sometimes consumers are looking for more than the ordinary, something beyond the basics. With that idea in mind, the owners of Hops and Habanas opened their doors in February 2009 in the Wal-Mart shopping center in Madison, dedicated to bringing a full selection of cigars and beers of interest to the area.
“The focus of our store is to be a source for the imports, the upstart microbrews, and the craft beers. We wanted to bring our customers a selection deeper, wider and richer than they find at a supermarket or convenience store,” said co-owner Trayce Miles. “The expected brands are on our shelves, of course, but the focus of our store is to be a source for the imports, the upstart microbrews and the craft beers that the true hops fans are looking for.” (more…)

Holiday Stress Can Increase the Day-to-Day Dental Grind
As the holidays arrive and smiles widen, another phenomenon also grows among those who succumb to the extra busy schedule — teeth grinding. Dr. Robert Rawdin, a Manhattan dentist specializing in prosthodontics, said he had seen 20 to 25 percent more patients with teeth grinding symptoms in the last year. And in San Diego, Dr. Gerald McCracken said that over the last 18 months his teeth grinding caseload had more than doubled. Both Dr. Rawdin and McCracken blame these findings in part on the current economic climate. (more…)

Holiday Lifestyle or Lifestyle Holiday
Diabetics Across the Nation are Preparing to Live the Holiday Season, and There are Life Choices to be Made
With holidays approaching, people get excited about taking breaks and spending time with loved ones. Some feel the pressures of preparation. If you have diabetes, you may have bigger decisions to make than the rest of the population.
As holidays arrive, the homes fill with presents and the table tops fill with sugar. While some people are deciding between peppermint and chocolate, diabetics are making a more important lifestyle choice. If you guessed that choice is “do I eat sweets?”, then you are not privy to the entire picture. The diabetic decision is to not change and ignore their condition, or to choose a path of longer life, and a life with a much higher quality. (more…)

Mississippi’s own Georgia Blue
Southern Cooking That’ll Rock Your World
When Chef Zack Athearn, entrepreneur Jason Ishee and bartender, Drew Beatty. joined together to create their new restaurant, the goal was simple: Elevate and enhance familiar Southern flavors, while keeping Southern Hospitality intact. Their creation is called Georgia Blue, and it is one of Madison’s newest and tastiest offerings.
The founders’ beginning concept translates throughout the restaurant, which is located at Colony Crossing in Madison. The interior is comfortable and friendly, welcoming to families and adults of all ages. There’s often live music, and almost always a group of friends out for a night on the town. For Athearn and Ishee, the inviting atmosphere was a must and was part of the concept from the start. (more…)
Why Family Doctors Refer Patients to an Endocrinologist
Many Diabetics, Thyroid Patients and Others with Endocrine-Based Diseases and Conditions Don’t Really Know Their Disease or Treatment Options
It is surprising in today’s world of advanced medicine that so many patients with diabetes, thyroid disease and other endocrine disorders don’t understand their disease or their treatment. While a family physician or OB/GYN is knowledgeable and capable of managing these conditions, patients can better benefit from more specialized attention beyond that offered from a comprehensive, routine exam. Many of these conditions are life long and require a more focused approach that incorporates the ever-changing world of medicine and treatment options. Thus, while primary care providers are highly trained in all areas of medicine, many refer patients to endocrinologists. (more…)

Mississippi Hearing Health
With New Technology, Hearing Is Believing
Hearing loss and impairment is traditionally an embarrassing subject. People often have suffered in a figurative and literal silence, reluctant to let anyone know the extent of their condition. Part of the embarrassment came from the affliction and part of it from the cure. Old fashioned hearing aids were simply too cumbersome and glitch prone to appeal to a wide range of patients. Almost everyone has seen a relative or friend struggle with an over-sized hearing aid that screeches with feedback. And many of those who use hearing aids have suffered with common complaints: the “talking in a barrel” feeling; background noise being too loud; and hearing themselves chewing. (more…)
